Master thesis: J.R.R. Tolkien's illustrations and world-building - 2020

For my master thesis I studied J.R.R. Tolkien's illustrations for the first edition of The Hobbit (1937) and how these operate in the proces of world-building. As soon as I finished my text I started working on the design of the document. Important was to show that the illustrations that were studied in this thesis are part of an object, of the book as a whole. To accomplish this I decided to photograph the full spreads, covers and the book and incorporate them with a subtle dropshadow to emphasise the three-dimensionality, instead of using scans of the pages. On the coverdesign of the thesis I incorporated Tolkien's the dust jacket in a new illustration. The interior layout was designed to be easy to read and have room for large images.

Master tutorial: Typewriter Art - 2019

In 2018-2019 I took part in a research group focussing on systems and games in modern American art (ca. 1957-1975). To complete the course I wrote a paper about the use of typewriters as a medium for artists. I wrote about concrete poetry, deconstruction and typography, followed by an overview of the history and use of typewriters for creative purposes. I concluded my research by comparing the works of Dom Sylvester Houédard (dsh) and Carl Andre, two artists who are famous for their language-based art and are known to have worked with typewriters.

The layout of this paper is a direct reference to how documents written with a typewriter used to look. For titles and the front cover I used a typewriter font, while optimising legibility of the running text with a sans serif font.

Premaster thesis: Goblin Market - 2018

During my premaster I worked on a thesis about the influence of different illustrations on the interpretation of Christina Rossetti's poem Goblin Market. I wanted space for large images, but also to add something special to the overall design. I handbound the booklet with a Japanese binding and handpainted the frontispiece. This illustration represents how the hand of the writer (with a pen) and the illustrator (with a brush) work together on the monogram GM, which stands for the poem itself.

Internship: Kunstveiling.nl - 2018

For my internship at Kunstveiling I made this magazine-style report. At this internship I conducted research for the artists database, with a focus on the applied arts and design. The pattern on the cover is inspired by a top view of famous vases from designer Alvar Aalto.

Essay: Andre Breton - 2016

In 2016 I wrote an essay about Andre Breton's Studio, which used to be his home workplace but is now (partly) on display at Centre Pompidou in Paris. It is an eclectic collection of curiosities of a man who contributed to the Surrealist movement. For the design of this essay I wanted to embody the same feeling I got when I saw the Studio. I chose to make three collages to add as illustrations.
